Access to reliable energy remains one of the greatest challenges facing rural communities across Cameroon.
Many villages are located far from the national electricity grid, making conventional power connections costly
and difficult to maintain. As a result, households often depend on kerosene lamps, candles, and disposable batteries
for lighting and basic energy needs. Yet Cameroon possesses significant renewable energy potential, particularly from solar,
wind, and small-scale hydro resources. At CAMAAY, we believe that access to affordable, clean energy is essential for reducing
poverty, strengthening education and healthcare systems, improving agricultural productivity, and creating economic opportunities.
By supporting renewable energy solutions, we aim to help rural communities gain access to safe, reliable, and environmentally
sustainable power that improves quality of life while protecting natural resources.
Our Approach: Community-Driven Renewable Energy Solutions
CAMAAY promotes decentralized renewable energy systems that can be adapted to the needs of individual households, schools, health centers, farms, and entire communities. Solar, wind, and small-scale hydropower technologies offer practical solutions because they generate electricity where it is needed, reducing dependence on expensive transmission infrastructure and minimizing energy losses. Our approach combines technical expertise, community participation, capacity building, and long-term maintenance planning to ensure sustainability. We work closely with government institutions, local councils, village development associations, universities, health facilities, farmer organizations, and private-sector partners to design and implement projects that meet international standards for safety, quality, and environmental responsibility. By training local technicians and community members, we help create ownership and ensure that systems continue functioning long after installation.
Key Program Areas and Activities
The Rural Communities Energy Access Program supports a wide range of initiatives designed to expand energy access and improve livelihoods. These include installing solar energy systems in households, schools, and healthcare facilities; developing solar-powered water purification and pumping systems; promoting renewable energy solutions for agriculture such as solar irrigation and crop drying technologies; and supporting the construction of small-scale hydroelectric facilities that provide clean, reliable energy without the environmental impacts associated with large dams. The program also encourages the growth of renewable energy enterprises by providing technical guidance, feasibility studies, business planning support, installation services, maintenance training, and access to partnerships that can strengthen renewable energy markets in rural Cameroon. Through these interventions, communities gain the energy infrastructure needed to support education, healthcare, communication, entrepreneurship, and food security.
Long-Term Impact and Vision for the Future
By expanding the use of renewable energy technologies, CAMAAY seeks to contribute to a more sustainable and inclusive future for Cameroon. Reliable access to electricity enables students to study after dark, health facilities to provide better services, farmers to increase productivity, businesses to grow, and families to improve their overall standard of living. At the same time, renewable energy reduces dependence on fossil fuels and wood fuel, helping to lower greenhouse gas emissions, protect forests, and strengthen climate resilience. Our vision is a Cameroon where rural communities have access to modern energy services that support economic development, social wellbeing, and environmental sustainability. Through partnerships, innovation, and community leadership, we are working to ensure that clean energy becomes a catalyst for lasting development and opportunity across rural Cameroon.
